Cheong Choong Kean 張崇堅

ceramic artist | Malaysia

Wood-fired pottery is an elemental act of chance and devotion to clay.

Born in Sandakan, Sabah, Cheong Choong Kean began making pottery in 1979. Over the subsequent four decades, his creative practice has spanned Malaysia, China, and Japan, remaining continuously anchored to the craft with a penchant for wood-firing his creations. Embracing this unpredictability, his vessels intentionally preserve every raw scorch mark and texture to remain imperfectly perfect.
